El Sistema reminds me, somewhat, of similar international precedents like Hungary's Kodály method, or Japan's Suzuki method, which have also used communal singing and playing to foster musicianship and a sense of community. There are many programs in public schools around the world that have tried to implement free music education yet many have failed because of "education reform" budget cuts. However, there is ALWAYS hope for sustainable, non-exclusive classical music training for more and more children. El Sistema is a great example of that.
